‘The tall skinny man from the meeting? Who shouted a bit but then he was ill? I saw him heading into the woods earlier.’

‘Oh! Yes, I’m afraid so. He must have stumbled upon the monster and been attacked. But luckily, my brave men were able to save him from further injury.’

‘Thank you.’ Frith cast a sorry look at the wagon. ‘Well, I’d better head home, I suppose, and tell them the news.’ Frith looked around. ‘Um, which way is home, by the way?’

The messenger stroked his chin for a moment.

‘Actually,’ he said, ‘as you’ve been in the monster’s cave, then really it would be best if you came with us now so you could tell us – and the king – all about it.’

‘But—’

‘We’ll send word back to the village so they know that you and …’

‘Joe.’

‘Yes, of course. That you and Joe are with us.’

The messenger muttered some instructions up to one of the soldiers, who looked confused. Then the messenger muttered something else, more angrily, and the soldier dug his heels into the flanks of his horse and set off slowly back through the wood.
